Building a Trustworthy Relationship
Counselling therapy is about co-creating a trustworthy relationship where you are able to reflect on issues deeply affecting your life, enabling you to make decisions and changes. The counselling process will vary according to your needs. It could cover working through bereavement, developmental issues, addressing and resolving specific problems, making decisions, coping with crises, developing personal insights and knowledge, working through feelings of inner conflict, improving relationships with others and addressing issues of the soul.
Counsellors do not give advice - though it can be tempting to ask! A counsellor’s role is to help you find your own way through. The counselling process will respect your abilities, age, culture, ethnicity, gender, personal resources, sexuality and values.
Counselling can be difficult, even painful. At points you may even feel worse and like giving up. When you do, it’s best to discuss it so we can find out if it is time for you to work through the feelings of wanting to give up or to work towards a satisfactory ending.
I gained my first counselling qualification in 1988, a BSc (Hons) in Counselling in 1999, and became an accredited counsellor with the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy in recognition of my training and experience in 2001.
I have worked with the Psychological Therapies Department, Gulson Hospital, Coventry; Safeline Warwick, a charity for people sexually abused as children; and the Student Counselling Service, Warwickshire College, as well as being in private practice since 1991.
Sessions last one hour and we will arrange the time and frequency together.
I work both short and long term. My preference is to work at the depth necessary for lasting change. I am happy to work with people at all ages and stages of life and development.
As a member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy I follow the Ethical Framework for Good Practice in Counselling and Psychotherapy and am subject to their professional conduct procedures. In accordance with the framework, I am in regular supervision with a supervisor to whom I will talk about our work together. She follows the same framework, which includes confidentiality. Supervision is a necessary part of my practice as a counsellor.
I believe that establishing a good working relationship is essential to successful counselling so
I offer a free half-hour introductory meeting where we discuss your needs and my way of working.
The fee for ongoing counselling sessions is £60 payable within 24 hours of the session, by bank transfer only during these times of covid.
Fee increases occur every other year, the next due February 2023.
